WASHINGTON, April 26 (Xinhua) -- Most U.S. voters believed former FBI Director James Comey more than they believed President Donald Trump, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released on Thursday.

Though Comey's overall approval rating was negative, 54 percent of the polled said they believed Comey over the president.

Meanwhile, 35 percent said they believed Trump more than they believed Comey.

The poll found 76 percent of Republican respondents backed Trump. Forty-seven percent of white men and white voters without college degrees also said they trusted Trump more than Comey.

The poll surveyed 1,193 U.S. voters from April 20 to 24 with a margin of error of 3.4 percentage points.

Comey has said that Trump's leadership style is "strikingly similar" to that of a mob boss in his new memoir.

In his tell-all memoir, "A Higher Loyalty: Truth, Lies and Leadership" which hit the shelves earlier this month, Comey described people around Trump as having a mob or a "Cosa Nostra" quality.

Comey was appointed as FBI director in 2013, and fired by Trump in May 2017.
