Ship hologram on the Mersey in Britain as young sailors prepare for race

LIVERPOOL, May 26 (Xinhua) -- A stunning ship has made a spooky arrival in Liverpool as part of a holiday weekend river event.

Making its British premiere, the ship has been designed by Studio Biangle, based in Transylvania, Romania.

The artists use a high-power water screen on which a three-dimensional hologram of a sailing ship is reproduced in the Salthouse Dock, against the stunning background of the famous Albert Dock on Liverpool's UNESCO World Heritage site waterfront.

Seen only at night, the contours of the projection simmer and flow in the wind, creating the illusion of a ghost ship.

It has already attracted thousands of visitors to the Albert Dock, one of most visited tourists attractions in Britain outside of Europe. It will be visible until Monday evening.

The art work is part of a festival that this weekend is seeing 17 ships from across the world berthed on the River Mersey for the start Monday of a four-day race.

The fleet, crewed by young sailors aged under 25, will leave Liverpool on Monday for Dublin, and then to Bordeaux in France in a race spanning the Irish Sea, Celtic Sea and the Bay of Biscay, covering almost 1,500 kilometers, in an event organised by Sail Training International.

Liverpool deputy mayor and culture spokeswoman Wendy Simon said: "The ghost ship signals the countdown to the start of our spectacular festivals, including the Tall Ships Regatta and the first ever Bordeaux Wine Festival in Britain. There are three days and nights of magnificent tall ships, spectacular entertainment and art and the chance to sample some of the world's finest wines."
