BUDAPEST, May 31 (Xinhua) -- Two men died in an electric plane that crashed Thursday morning near Pecs in southern Hungary, according to official sources.

The victims were 42 and 61 years old.

Hungarian police announced Thursday that the small aircraft had crashed near the small settlement of Szalanta.

"The electric aircraft took off at 10:00 a.m. (0800 GMT), went on two laps and then crashed for unknown reasons," county police spokesman Dejan Popovics told Hungarian news agency MTI.

According to local reports, the plane went down in a corn field about 1.5 km from the Pecs-Pogany Airport, and the maize burned out in a circle of 5 to 10 meters.

The police have launched a criminal procedure for endangering air traffic.

The plane was an "eFusion" model made by a cooperation between Magnus and Siemens and was a fully electric driven aircraft.

The first eFusion made its maiden flight on April 11, 2016. The aircraft has received the eFlight 2016 award at the 2016 Aero show, the largest and most prestigious aviation event in Europe, held annually in Friedrichschafen, Germany.
