NEW DELHI, June 10 (Xinhua) -- At least 12 people had been killed and 13 others injured in two separate road accidents in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, police said Sunday.

The first accident occurred when a speeding vehicle hit a tree in Sasni area in the state's Hathras district late Saturday night.

"While six occupants of the car, including the driver, were killed in the impact of the crash, one injured has been admitted to a local hospital," a police official said.

The second accident occurred when a speeding truck rammed into a parked passenger bus heading to the tourist town of Agra, home to the iconic Taj Mahal, late Saturday evening.

"While six people died on the spot, 12 sustained injuries and have been admitted to a nearby hospital," another police official said.

Probes have been ordered into the incidents, officials said.

"The driver of the truck in the second accident fled the spot leaving the vehicle behind. We have booked him for rash driving and launched a manhunt to nab him," the official said.

India has the highest number of road fatalities in the world. Road accidents occur mostly due to poor driving or badly maintained roads and vehicles.
