WASHINGTON, Sept. 12 (Xinhua) -- Two Russian bombers were intercepted by two U.S. F-22 fighter jets near Alaska on Tuesday, said the U.S. military on Wednesday.

The Russian Tu-95 bombers, accompanied by two Russian Su-35 fighter jets, were intercepted west of mainland Alaska at around 10:00 p.m. EDT on Tuesday (0200 GMT, Wednesday), said the North American Aerospace Defense Command in a statement.

The Russian warplanes did not enter U.S. or Canadian sovereign airspace, the statement added.

In May, the Russian Defense Ministry said that Russia's Tu-95 strategic bombers and Tu-142 anti-submarine aircraft jets were escorted by two U.S. F-22 fighters when they flew over the neutral waters of the Arctic Ocean, the Bering Sea and the Sea of Okhotsk on a routine flight.
