YANGON, Jan. 18 (Xinhua) -- The Myanmar police have filed charges against a parliament member and a writer for giving instigative talks about Rakhine sovereignty in Yathedaung, the country's western Rakhine state, Myanmar News Agency reported Thursday.

Aye Maung is a parliament representative elected from Ann township constituency of Rakhine state.

The talks, organized by the May Yu Yin Thwe social service society to mark the 233rd anniversary of the fall of Rakhine Kingdom and the loss of sovereignty, took place Monday at a monastery in the township.

The Rakhine state government's cabinet meeting decided on Tuesday to file charges against the two under Section 17 (1) of the Unlawful Association Act.

Writer Wai Hin Aung has been detained, said the Police Force.

Violence was sparked on Tuesday night by a ban of holding literary talks show at Nan Taw Yar Gon, an ancient site of former Rakhine King's Palace in Mrauk U, to mark the anniversary event.

As many as 10,000 demonstrators gathered and marched to Rakhine District Administration Office to lodge a protest which turned violent. Seven people were killed and 12 others injured in clashes between demonstrators and the police.

Myanmar State Counselor Aung San Suu Kyi, at a special coordination meeting on late Wednesday, called for a prompt investigation into the incident in Mrauk U, warning of action to be taken against those who instigated the riot.

Local authorities were taking measures to restore rule of law and stability in the region.
