PHNOM PENH, Jan. 21 (Xinhua) -- The ruling Cambodian People's Party (CPP) added 342 new members to its central committee during an extraordinary congress on Sunday, bringing the total number of the central committee members to 865, said the party's resolutions.

"In elevating leadership capability of the party in response to demands of situation and tasks in this new phase, the congress decided to restructure its central committee members from 545 to 865, removing names of 22 central committee members who passed away, and making the by-election of 342 new central committee members," the resolutions said at the end of the three-day extraordinary congress.

The congress was presided over by Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen, who is also the CPP's president, and was attended by 2,409 senior party members.

According to the resolutions, the congress unanimously supported the candidacy of Hun Sen for the prime minister for the sixth legislative term of the National Assembly (2018-2023) and terms thereafter.

The country is scheduled to hold the national election on July 29.

The congress also adopted unanimously the party's five-year political platform (2018-2023) for the construction and defense of motherland, the resolutions said.

The political platform stipulated various strategic goals and prioritized major policies in defending independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity, and peace to guarantee national development, and people's wellbeing.

The CPP has ruled the country since 1979.

In the 2013 national election, the CPP won a majority vote, receiving 68 parliamentary seats against 55 seats for the now-defunct opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party.
