UNITED NATIONS, April 19 (Xinhua) -- The Security Council on Thursday welcomed the appointment of a prime minister and the announcement of the date for legislative elections in Guinea-Bissau.

Members of the council welcomed the appointment of Aristides Gomes as prime minister based on consensus reached between key political stakeholders, and the announcement that the country's legislative elections will take place on Nov. 18, 2018, Francisco Tenya, Peru's deputy permanent representative to the United Nations, told reporters.

Council members underscored the importance of the swift formation of an inclusive government, the resumption of work of the National Assembly, and the conducting of elections in a timely and credible manner, said Tenya, whose country holds the presidency of the Security Council for the month of April, after closed-door consultations of the council.

The council members also asked for efforts to implement the Conakry Agreement and the six-point roadmap of the Economic Community of West African States (Ecowas).

They voiced their support for Ecowas' efforts toward a lasting solution to the political crisis in the tiny West African country sparked by President Jose Mario Vaz's firing of then Prime Minister Domingos Simoes Pereira in August 2015.
