Chinese Embassy in Belgium holds "China Development" photo exhibition

BRUSSELS, June 29 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese Embassy in Belgium held a photo exhibition about China's 40-year development on Friday at the Halles Saint-Gery, one of the landmark historic buildings in the centre of Brussels.

Over 100 people, including the Embassy's Charge d'affaires Zhang Chi, who were present at the "2018 China-EU Human Rights Seminar", attended the opening ceremony.

In his opening speech, Zhang praised the contributions of ordinary people in China's development.

"Just like the radiance of the sun is reflected by a drop of water, the development of a country may be epitomized by ordinary people. It you see the pictures, you'll know the focus of the camera is not on exciting skyscrapers or complex modern transportation hubs. The everyday lives of ordinary Chinese people, who are they, what do they do? This is what the exhibition is all about," he said.

Zhang also noted how this year marks the 40th anniversary of China's reform and opening up. "After 40 years efforts by the Chinese people, things have changed so much. China has grown into the world's second largest economy, the largest industrial producer, the largest trader of goods, and the holder of the largest foreign exchange reserves," he said.

According to Zhang, China has made remarkable progress in human rights, but noted that Chinese people still faces the contradiction between unbalanced and inadequate development and the people's needs for a better life.

"We still have a long way to go to enable all Chinese people to enjoy the benefits of development," said the Chinese diplomat.

He also talked about the role of bilateral cooperation in promote the development in both sides. "I believe that through the joint efforts from both sides, the relations between our two countries will make more achievements and bring more benefits to the Chinese and Belgian people."

He mentioned the Belt and Road Initiative in particular, saying China welcomes Belgium's participation in the initiative, which will undoubtedly strengthen cooperation with Belgium in all fields.

The photo exhibition will last for two weeks and will end on July 13. More than 50 works are on display throughout the exhibition, showing China's achievements in fields, such as urban and rural development, poverty alleviation and education.
