HANOI, Dec. 11 (Xinhua) -- A flood caused by heavy rain in Vietnam's central region since the weekend has killed two local people and left three others missing, local media reported on Tuesday.

The flood killed a 59-year-old woman and 35-year-old woman in Quang Tri province, and left missing a 54-year-old man and a 51 year-old man in Quang Nam province and a 19-year-old man in Thua Thien Hue province, Vietnam News Agency reported, quoting Vietnam's Central Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control.

The flood in the central region inundated over 4,600 houses, forcing 323 families to evacuate, damaged nearly 9,100 hectares of rice and roughly 920 hectares of other crops, and killed nearly 16,300 cattle and poultry.

It also damaged over 47.4 km of dykes and irrigation canals and more than 58.8 km of roads, and inundated nearly 490 hectares of aquaculture ponds.

Central localities, including Quang Tri, Quang Nam, Thua Thien Hue, Quang Ngai province and Da Nang city are actively repairing damaged roads, railways, canals and dykes, stocking food, drinking water and medicines, and keeping students at home if their schools have been flooded.

In Vietnam, natural disasters, mostly typhoons, floods and landslides, killed or left missing 189 people and injured 140 others, and caused property losses of some 9,000 billion Vietnamese dong (391.3 million U.S. dollars) in the first 11 months of this year, according to the country's Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.
