JOHANNESBURG, March 7 (Xinhua) -- The International Netball Federation on Thursday announced that the 2023 Netball World Cup will be held in Cape Town.

The South African government hailed the decision, saying that it will be the first time for Africa to host a Netball World Cup.

Cape Town beat New Zealand's Auckland to win the bid, which is another landmark achievement as South Africa has already hosted a soccer and rugby world cup.

"The announcement showcases South Africa's ability to host world-class global events across a number of sports and other genres, which also opens avenues for economic benefits. South Africa is committed to the development of netball, as it is a growing sport worldwide," said Phumla Williams, Deputy Director General of Government Communications and Information Systems.

As African countries play a leading role in the top 20 International Netball Federation world rankings, Williams said, "Netball like any other sport has the power to bring people together. It shapes many lives - instills a competitive spirit, demands teamwork and discipline."

The Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Sport and Recreation also congratulated Netball South Africa for successfully bidding for the World Cup. Beauty Dlulane, the chairperson of the committee, said that shows the confidence the international community have on South Africa.

The Netball World Cup is expected to run for 10 days and will see 16 countries and regions compete for the title.
