JUBA, March 28 (Xinhua) -- South Sudan on Thursday entered into a partnership with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to harmonize policies and laws aimed at strengthening internet governance.

Ladu Kenyi, director general of South Sudan's National Communication Authority, said robust policies are required to boost internet governance amid threats like cyber crime.

"The government is working with other development partners to enhance safety of digital infrastructure and data. Safety of cyber space is key to advance development, peace and security in the country," Kenyi said.

He said the policies will give investors a platform to extend their services to the local population at the grassroots and boost access to opportunities through digital platforms.

"One of the policies the government has done in its 2040 Vision is to improve information and communication technology (ICT) in the schools' curriculum. Now in our secondary schools ICT is a subject which is compulsory; in primary school it is a cross-cutting subject," Kenyi said.

Awol Endris, UNESCO representative in South Sudan, said the launch of a vibrant internet governance policy is a great step toward realization of safety in the cyber space amid threats that can compromise national security and economic growth.

Endris said that internet services that are accessible and inclusive to everyone will assist in the realization of the sustainable development in South Sudan.

He said internet has the potential to boost literacy, freedom of expression and creation of a knowledge-society in South Sudan.

"All these issues are relevant to UNESCO roles in South Sudan and also important in the achievement of the national development in the country," said Endris.
