BEIJING, April 5 (Xinhua) -- On Tomb-sweeping Day (Qingming Festival) which falls on Friday, Chinese people mourn the dead. The recollecting of the country's heroes and martyrs is the focus.

The history of Tomb-Sweeping Day goes back to more than 2,000 years ago. Traditionally it is an occasion for the Chinese people to worship their family ancestors.

Now it is believed that strength can be gained from the past particularly from heroes and martyrs who have left an indelible imprint in the revolutionary history.

The government has called for memorizing the heroes and martyrs who sacrificed for national independence and prosperity. It is their sacrifice in either peace or wartime that allows Chinese people to live a comfortable and happy life today.

As China is moving closer to reach its lofty goal of national rejuvenation, efforts must be made to gather strength from all walks of life through paying tribute to the country's revolutionary martyrs and fallen heroes and carrying forward their spirit.

Memorizing heroes and martyrs is common practice in modernized countries across the world.

This year, the People's Republic of China will celebrate its 70th anniversary of founding, offering a good chance for its people to remember heroes and martyrs and muster the energy to build a moderately prosperous society.

Last April, the country strengthened protection of the reputation and honor of heroes and martyrs, and toughened punishment for those who defame heroes, distort and diminish them.

Currently, the country is faced with challenges on its development path. What martyrs and heroes have sacrificed in the past will give Chinese people the vigor and wisdom to conquer the difficulties that lie ahead.
