DHAKA, June 4 (Xinhua) -- With or without seat-ensuring tickets, people are gathering at ferry terminals, railway and bus stations in Bangladesh's capital Dhaka to join relatives in their village homes for one of the largest Muslim religious festivals Eid-ul-Fitr which marks the end of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.

The long distance bus stations, ferry terminals and train stations were seen overflowing with tens of thousands of home-bound passengers on Monday night.

The Muslim majority in Bangladesh will celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr on or around June 6 based on the sighting of the new moon.

TV reports of several ferries, trains and buses on Monday showed lots of people clinging on the rails of ferries and trains.

Sheuli Akter is one such home-goer. She is going to go her village home in Brahmanbaria district, some 109 km northeast of capital Dhaka, to celebrate Eid with her parents and family members.

"We ignore hardships of journey to share joy of Eid with father, mother and kith and kids."

Eid vacations have also come as an opportunity for Taslima Alam Raisa, a student in a Dhaka school. With her family members Raisa joined tens of thousands of others leaving Dhaka for Eid on Monday.

According to estimates, about one-third of Dhaka's some 20 million residents usually leave the capital city twice in a year on Eid-ul-Fitr and Eid-ul-Adha, the feast of sacrifice.

Dhaka's normally busy streets saw less traffic on Monday although road leading to dozens of shopping malls and terminals were clogged with vehicles.

Tight security measures were noticed in parts of Dhaka to ensure the safety of the home-goers and their return, and especially to ensure security at places like shopping malls and markets.
