EL PASO, the United States, Aug. 5 (Xinhua) -- The police department of El Paso, U.S. state of Texas, confirmed Monday afternoon that one German and seven Mexican nationals were among the dead in weekend Walmart shooting.

El Paso police chief Greg Allen said at a press conference held here Monday afternoon that 13 U.S. citizens were among the deceased and the identification of another deceased was to be confirmed.

The victims' identities, except the 15-year-old undetermined boy, the youngest one, were released by the El Paso Police Department. The eldest victim is Luis Alfonzo Juarez, 90-year-old U.S. citizen.

According to Allen, two injured were still in critical condition.

Mexican Foreign Affairs Minister Marcelo Ebrard on Monday tweeted that "8 fellow Mexicans have died as a result of Saturday's terrorist act."

At a press conference held Monday afternoon at the Mexican consulate in El Paso, Ebrard highlighted the need to address racism and white supremacy in the United States.

"Since we consider this an act of terror, Mexican law allows Mexico to participate in the investigation," Ebrard said, adding "this will be the first investigation of this importance in Mexico's history regarding an act of terror against Mexican citizens in U.S. territory."

The 21-year-old assailant, Patrick Crusius, who opened fire at a Walmart mall largely catering to the local Mexican-American community, is believed to have been a white supremacist motivated by hatred for immigrants.

Minutes before staging the mass shooting, Crusius was believed to have posted a manifesto against immigrants online.

The death toll in the weekend mass shooting has risen to 22 after two people died at a hospital, El Paso police and medical officials said Monday.

More than 20 people were also injured in the attack.

El Paso lies across the border from the Mexican town of Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua, and cross-border traffic is heavy as residents of both cities go back and forth to shop, work or study.
